Thursday DAYTIME Class:<br> The Mystery of Being

Thursday DAYTIME Class:
The Mystery of Being

Thursdays from 3rd July for Six Weeks - 11.00am to 1.15pm

This weekly daytime drop-in class includes many aspects of Buddhist practice which can be helpful to you whether you wish to practice Buddhism or not. Each week begins with a guided meditation, after which Shakyapada will introduce a particular theme for the week. Discussion and questions are encouraged.

Who am I? What am I? The Mystery of Being

From 3rd July for six weeks we will be exploring the Buddhist concept of self - or rather non-self or anatman. This is not to say that the self does not exist, merely that it does not exist in the way that we think it does and seeing the real truth of self can lead us to greater happiness and contentment.

In the first week Shakyapada will introduce the Buddha’s core teaching of conditionality: that all things arise on conditions and cease when those conditions cease. In subsequent weeks she will explore the Buddhist concept of self which is related to this core teaching and she look at this through the concept of the five skandas. These are the five ‘heaps’ or categories which make up the entirety of every human being. They comprise: form, feeling, perception, volitions and consciousness.

These six weeks promise to be a fascinating exploration of the human state and an insight into how we create our own suffering and how we can let go of it and realise true happiness.

No need to book - just turn up when you can. There is no charge but a donation each week of £10 or more would be appreciated (see below)

DONATIONS: York Buddhist Centre has no outside income or support and no one is paid. These classes are given freely in a spirit of friendship. However we do have rent to pay and utilities and other running costs and we could not meet these without the generous support of those who use our centre. So, if you can, we ask you to make a donation when you attend.  We suggest £10 each week but please give more or less according to your means.
