Beautiful Friendship in the Spiritual Life: Day Retreat with Mitra Ceremony
Sunday 26 November 2023 10am – 4:30pm
This is a special day retreat when both the York and Scarborough sanghas come together to celebrate friendship on the spiritual path and to witness members of the Scarborough sangha making a commitment to The Three Jewels in a mitra ceremony held in the Shrine Room at York Buddhist Centre. Family and friends of those involved in the mitra ceremony are invited to the afternoon session from 2.00pm.
There will also be three mitra reaffirmation ceremonies too from the Scarborough Sangha. Karen, Nigel and Rachel who are already mitras will reaffirm their commitment to Buddhist Practice in the context of Triratna.
The day will be led by Mahasraddha and Shakyapada,
In the morning we will be exploring aspects of Spiritual Friendship (kalyana mitrata) and seeing how this is different to ordinary friendship. There will be meditation, a talk and an opportunity to discuss the experience of spiritual friendship.
In the afternoon there will be a mitra ceremony when two members of the Scarborough sangha make their three offerings and commit themselves to the Buddhist Path in Triratna.
Becoming a mitra (which means "friend") is a significant step in someone's spiritual life. It is a declaration that they consider themselves to be a Buddhist within the context of the Triratna Buddhist Community. It is also a commitment to deepening their practice. This is a significant occasion both for the new mitras and those who witness them as they become mitras.
Everyone from the Scarborough and York sanghas are welcome. It is traditional to offer small gifts and cards to each of them at the end of the ceremony, if you wish.
If you join us for the morning session please bring vegan food to share
