Avalokitesvara evening - a dedication of our new shrine and thangka.

Avalokitesvara evening - a dedication of our new shrine and thangka.

Wednesday 16 April 2025 7pm – 9:15pm

This evening we will be holding a short dedication ceremony for our new reorganised shrine room - and for our new thangka of Avalokitesvara.

A thangka is a traditional painting on fabric, which depict Buddhist deities, scenes, or symbols. Two of these thangkas, originally bought many years ago in Nepal, have been generously donated to our centre by our friend Ann. One is a beautiful mandala which will be hung in the shrine room, the other - an image of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara - will take pride of place above our new shrine.

Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, holds a special place in our Triratna tradition. The image of the thousand arms, each holding a different tool, represents the Triratna Order and movement practising together for the benefit of all beings. Sangharakshita said that though none of us might individually become a fully realized Bodhisattva, all of us practising together might well fulfil that role.

We will begin this evening with a meditation, followed by a short dedication ceremony and, after the break, we'll explore the legend and myths of Avalokitesvara and discover how his thousand arms and five heads came into being. The evening will be led by Shakyapada.

All over 18 are welcome. Suitable for all levels of experience - or none. No need to book - just turn up when you can.

DONATIONS: We ask you to make a donation each week when you attend. We suggest £10 each week but please give what you can.
